College Orientation Program
Scholarship Winners 2008
The following scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen in high school to recognize their commitment to academic achievement. Winning students persevered through lengthy applications, essays and interviews. Many of the students received ongoing support and assistance through their participation in Midtown’s school year programs.
• The Daniel T. Beagley Scholarship, which covers $8,000 over four years, is awarded to ANDREW ALMARAZ, who will attend Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory High School.

• The Chicago Urban Youth Scholarship, which covers $5,000 over four years, is awarded to IVAN DELGADO, who will attend St. Laurence High School.

• The Daniel and Ada Rice Scholarship will be awarded in various amounts of up to $1,750 to the following students:
MISAEL LOPEZ – who will attend Francis Parker School
ANTHONY BARNES – who will attend Christ the King Jesuit College Prep High
ALEX MURILLO – who will attend St. Patrick High School
IVAN DELGADO – who will attend St. Lawrence Seminary High School
OSMAR GARCIA – who will attend De La Salle High School
ALEX GALLEGOS – who will attend St. Patricks High School

• The Daniel Murphy Scholarship, a comprehensive scholarship that covers the major portion of a high school’s tuition, has been awarded to:

BRAULIO FERNANDEZ – who will attend Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire

• The LINK Unlimited Scholarship is a partial scholarship to a private high school and has been awarded to:

• The PEAK Scholarship (PEAK stands for Partnership to Educate and Advance Kids) is a near-full scholarship to Holy Trinity High School and has been awarded to:

• The HFS Chicago Scholars Scholarship is a partial scholarship to a private high school. Mr. Brian Parker, the organization’s Executive Director, will help me present the scholarship certificates. The students in this summer’s program who have been awarded the scholarship are:

For Students currently in High School
• John Toman College Readiness Exams Scholarship Awards $2,500 distributed
These scholarships are for High school students who have shown greatest improvement and greatest achievement in the ACT and PSAT prep courses. The college readiness exams prep courses run during the academic year and focus on the fundamental skills sets in math, science, English, reading and writing in addition to test taking strategies.
Here today to congratulate the winners is John Toman. John has supported the College Readiness Exams prep courses by awarding these scholarships in order to help Midtown students continue to fund their High School educations.

For incoming Freshmen in College
• Orland Park/Rotary Scholarship $2,000
This scholarship is for high school seniors planning to attend a two-year or technical college program.
Here today to congratulate the winner is Frank Christiano. A representative of the Orland Park Rotary Club, Frank has supported Midtown for many years by continuously awarding this scholarship to a Midtown student.
2008 Winner: HUGO VILLALOBOS
• Posse Scholarship
The Posse scholarship is a full College Tuition scholarship. Posse selects its winners based on academic excellence and strong leadership and communication skills. Students cannot apply directly to Posse, but must be nominated by community organizations such as Midtown Center. Midtown selects their nominees based on consistent participation in the summer and school year college orientation program, and taking active leadership roles within these programs.

• Dan Jorndt Leadership Award $10,000
This scholarship is for high school students who demonstrate extraordinary leadership skills and potential. Requirements for nomination are consistent participation in the summer and school year college orientation program, and taking active leadership roles within these programs.

Mayor’s Excellence Awards
The Mayor’s Excellence Award is Midtown’s most distinguished award and recognizes talent, effort and character. Our staff selects the most outstanding students from each program. These are young men who have demonstrated a strong commitment to academic, athletic, and personal development and have exemplified the goals and ideals of Midtown Center.
The winner of the award from the 7th grade class first attended Midtown’s programs last summer. This year he excelled in all subjects, always putting forth an outstanding effort. This was especially true in his Math and Science classes. He achieved near perfect attendance marks. He also exhibits fortitude and a spirit of service. A student at South Loop Elementary School, the winner of the Mayor’s Excellence Award from the 7th grade class is: ENRIQUE MEJIA.
This year there are two winners of the Mayor’s Excellence Award from the 8th grade class. The first winner has participated in both our school year and summer programs. He has distinguished himself in the eyes of his teachers by his many positive and insightful contributions to classroom discussion, especially in Character Development classes, and demonstrates great personal integrity. He always achieves excellent attendance marks. A student at Ruben Salazar Elementary School, the first winner of the Mayor’s Excellence Award from the 8th grade class is: DEJUAN ROBERTS.
The second winner attended our program for the first time this summer. His everyday focus and preparation were truly impressive, and he always demonstrated great responsibility and perseverance. He excelled in all subjects, especially in English class, and also achieved perfect attendance, attending 32 out of 32 program days. As student at Maria Saucedo Scholastic Academy, the second winner of the Mayor’s Excellence Award is: EDUARDO CORREA.

• Awarded to the most outstanding incoming freshman
Unanimously nominated by his teachers, this student has demonstrated great maturity, leadership and moral awareness and responsibility in and out of the class room. A major example of these traits this summer was highlighted in his article titled “Stopping the violence in Chicago,” which was printed in the 4th edition of the Midtown Voice. Awarded to the most outstanding incoming freshmen, this mayor’s excellence award goes to Yusef Hood.
Ninth grade student winner: YUSEF HOOD
• Awarded to the most outstanding student in the apprenticeship programs
This student continues to show great leadership in his work during the summer and the school year in the college orientation program. This summer he took full ownership for his team project in the Business Apprenticeship by accepting full responsibility for tracking inventory, costs and profits and business innovation. Awarded to the most outstanding student within the apprenticeship programs, this Mayor’s excellence award goes to Fernando Gamboa.

• Awarded to the most outstanding intern among coaches, office and support employees
Only being his first summer at Midtown, this student has already shown the resolve and character of a seasoned Midtown student. The support crew position is considered to be the most difficult job here at Midtown, and both his supervisors and peers agree that he consistently accepts and carries out his responsibilities like a true professional. Awarded to the most outstanding student within the internship programs, this Mayor’s excellence award goes to Simon Du.
